Don Quixote Book Cover Project

  ---ENG - This is one of the projects that I enjoyed doing most during 2011. I don’t have many chances to work with other people and to do something different than drawing, so when an opportunity presents itself, I enjoy it double. The talented Alex Just was the photography director and Ron Janzen contributed enormously as light technician. I came up with the concept and managed the art direction. 

---ESP – Éste es uno de los proyectos que más disfruté haciendo en 2011. No tengo muchas oportunidades de trabajar con otra gente y de hacer algo diferente a dibujar. Por eso disfruto el doble cuando ocurre. El talentoso Alex Just fue el director de fotografía y Ron Janzen contribuyó enormemente como técnico de luces. Yo creé el concepto y me encargué de la dirección artística.

--- ENG - We shot this at my place because I didn’t want it to look like a set. Peter Skoro, instructor at DCTC, served as the perfect model. Thanks Pete! Keep reading for more info about the creative process, sketches, etc. 

--- ESP - Tiramos esto en my casa porque no quería que pareciera un estudio. Peter Skoro, profesor mío, a pesar de ser americano, tenía toda la cara de Quijote y fue EL fichaje. Sigue leyendo para más información sobre el proceso creativo, bocetos etc.

 --- ENG - The photo was designed to be a “jacket:” the front and back cover of a book, plus the spine. Everything had to be set so the elements in the scene served the purpose of telling what the image was about. The arrangement of the objects in the scene was key to set a clear hierarchy of visual elements and to end up having some negative space in the right place for the typography. 

--- ESP – La foto se creó para que envolviera la portada y contraportada de un libro, lo que se llama una “chaqueta”. Había que prepararlo todo para que los elementos en la escena sirvieran al propósito de contar lo que la imagen quería decir. La colocación de objetos en la escena era clave para jerarquizar según su importancia a los elementos visuales y para dejar espacio para la tipografía.

--- ENG - We weren’t too happy with the results of the first session, though. 

---ESP – Del dicho al hecho hay mucho trecho y no nos quedamos muy satisfechos con el primer intento.

  ---ENG - This fist attempt didn’t work for a cover. The arrangement of the elements in the scene isn’t right typography-wise. There are tangencies that intersect with the model; also, there are objects that are too distracting. It is too dark and we don’t have enough information to realize that Peter is a sixteenth century knight-wannabe. 

--- ESP – Este primer intento no vale para la portada. La colocación de los elementos en la escena se superpone con la tipografía. Hay tangencias que chocan con el modelo y además hay objetos que distraen demasiado. Esta muy oscuro y no tenemos la  información suficiente para ver que es un tio leyendo en el siglo XVI.

--- ENG - Well, looks like we worked hard in our second attempt, and we made it. Or at least I think so. Thanks to Dakota County Tech College for their valuable photo-making material.
--- ESP - Bueno, parece que lo conseguimos la segunda vez. O eso creo.
